On Aug. 25, Brian Freiss, a math teacher at Highland Elementary School in Silver Spring, was announced as one of the seven finalists for the Maryland Teacher of the Year award, an annual program that recognizes exemplary teachers across the country. He was named the Montgomery County Teacher of the Year this past May. Freiss began teaching at Highland right out of college, and has been teaching math to second through fifth graders for 10 years.
