Students chose movie theme in advisories

The homecoming theme this year will be movie genres, a theme nominated by the Student Government Association (SGA) and voted on by students in advisories. The subthemes are animated cartoons, superhero, science fiction and western for seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshmen respectively.

In past years, the SGA voted for the theme, but it decided this year to incorporate more student feedback, according to SGA President Sibyl Brown. "We thought we would try to get more input," Brown said. Subthemes were nominated together with the main themes and presented to students. The other nominated themes were music genres, candy and animal kingdom. Each class will have designated hallways to decorate.

Homecoming will be preceded by spirit week and the homecoming football game. Due to the four-day election weekend, spirit week will take place over two different weeks. Thursday, Oct. 30 is Kindergarten Day, followed by Halloween Day on Friday. Wednesday, Nov. 5 is Kickin' It Old School Retro Day. Thursday, Nov. 6 and Friday, Nov. 7 are Class Movie Genre Day and Class Color Day, respectively.

The homecoming football game will be played against Springbrook at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7. A traditional pre-game tailgate party sponsored by the SGA will include free face painting and will feature performances from a go-go band and one of Blair's air bands, according to Brown. The event is open to all Blazers free of cost, except for food and select entertainment-related activities, such as donning inflatable sumo wrestler suits.

According to Brown, local radio station Hot 99.5 deejay Chris Styles will be returning as the deejay for the dance. The SGA will also include new touches, such as adding more lights than in previous years. "The main goal is just to keep the positive school spirit," Brown said.
