Blair girls’ varsity volleyball defeats Magruder in a close match

The girls’ volleyball Blazers (2-0) beat the Magruder Colonels (1-1) on September 15th after a suspenseful match. The game started rough, with the Blazers losing the first set, but their persistence and endurance throughout the match led to a 3-2 comeback victory. 

Magruder scored the game’s first point and jumped into an early lead in the first set, widening the gap by as many as eight points. However, the Blazers kept fighting and narrowed the gap toward the end of the set, though they eventually lost it.

During the second and third sets, however, Blair quickly rebounded. Keeping their momentum from the end of the first set, the Blazers were able to maintain a considerable lead against the Colonels, winning both sets comfortably. The Blazers’ pride and confidence on the court were evident as they overcame their slow start. A major highlight of the third set occurred when Blair sophomore Felicia He perfectly executed a challenging right-side hit; the entire team erupted in cheers, as her move got them another point closer to winning the set.

However, this momentum quickly stalled when Magruder began the fourth set with a 6-0 lead. Blair seemed to have lost its previous flow, and the Magruder lead quickly grew to seven as the score became 5-12. The set ended in a comfortable win for Magruder, bringing the game to a winner-take-all fifth set. 

After a brief pause between sets, the Blazers seamlessly fell back into step with an energy that was unmatched. The Blazers quickly built an eight-point lead, and the rest of the set was unsuspenseful as the Blazers cruised to a victory. 

When asked about how the season was going, the girls’ varsity volleyball head coach, Chris Liang, expressed his pride for the team while also acknowledging the potential for improvement.

“The season’s going fairly well,” Liang remarked. “They still have a lot to learn. There are a couple of new girls on the team, two freshmen who just started, and the seniors are doing a really good job in terms of passing down their knowledge about the game.”

The varsity girls’ volleyball team now has a record of 2-0. The Blazers’ next game will be at home against Einstein and will take place on Thursday, September 17th, at 6:30 PM.
