Blazers are bested by Barons at the first meet of the season

Mar. 29, NELSON H. KOBREN MEMORIAL GYM—

The gymnastics team lost their first meet to the Bethesda Chevy-Chase Barons today with a roster of mainly inexperienced gymnasts. The Blazer team, which was only created a few years ago, tried their best against the more experienced Barons. "We did pretty well considering most of our team is new to gymnastics," said co-captain Nicole Poor.

Despite the low scores, Blair managed to place in every category. Sophomore Abby Cember placed fourth on vault with an 8.0, sixth on floor with an 8.0 and fourth in the All-Around category with an overall score of 31.2.

Sophomore Anna Hadfield also helped boost Blair's overall score. She placed third in vault with an 8.1, third on bars with an 8.7, fifth on floor with an 8.1 and second in the All-Around category with an overall score of 32.7, bested only by a BC-C score of 34.1.

Poor was the only Blazer to place on beam. She took sixth place with an 8.2, preventing a BC-C sweep of the category. Poor also placed sixth on bars with a 7.8 and fifth All-Around with an overall score of 31.

Although the Barons placed first in every category, the Blazers feel they performed well. "All the girls did excellent despite the nerves," said assistant coach Edra Brisbane, a 2006 Blair gymnastics alumnus. Brisbane forecasts a bright future for this young team. "We're only going to get better."

The next meet will take place at 6 pm on April 12th at Gaithersburg High School. Please come out to support the team!
