Blair girls' place 4th out of 16, boys' 17th out of 20 in meet

DEC. 29, PRINCE GEORGE'S SPORTSPLEX–

The Indoor Track teams performed at polar opposites today in the Montgomery County Developmental Relays meet. The Blair girls performed at their highest level so far this season, scoring 32 points, while the boys scored merely two by placing in the top six in only one event. The girls' team placed 4th overall at the end of the meet, while the boys were tied with three teams for 17th place.

The girls' team scored in varying events, ranging from the shot put, to the high jump to the 55m hurdles. The most dominating performance by Blair was the girls' first place finish in the 4x800m relay. The team had a time of 10:11, which was a full :41 ahead of second place Damascus. "The girls' strength is definitely their relays and distance running," said Coach Carl Lewin after the meet.

Sophomores Ashlyn and Halsey Sinclair placed in the top five of other events as well. Ashlyn finished 3rd in the 55m hurdles with a time of 9.4, while Halsey placed 5th in the high jump with a height of 4' 4". The Blair girls also scored points in the 55m dash and two Blazers scored in the shot put.

The boys' team placed 6th in the 4x200m relay with a time of 1:40, matching their fastest time of the season. "The boys are definitely a young team and they are competing against very strong junior and senior runners. As they keep at it they will get better," stated Lewin.

Overall, Lewin felt that "the girls have a great chance of qualifying in several events for the State Meet, and eventually placing well in those events." Lewin had a different position on the future of the boys' team though. "The boys' team has a lot to work on but has time to get better." Lewin felt that several individual boys performed well, but a lack of consistency doomed the team to its low finish.
