Police arrest girl for incident
A fight broke out between a girl and boy, both 16, in a second-floor hallway just after 9 a.m. today, during the passing period between first period and advisory. The girl stabbed the boy, inflicting a non-serious wound, and proceeded to run out of the school. She was arrested shortly afterwards.
"It started as a verbal altercation and escalated to a physical altercation," Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) Spokesperson Lucille Baur said.
Police were called to the scene at 9:18, and paramedics took the boy to an area hospital, according to Baur. "It was a single, non-life-threatening wound to the shoulder," she said.
The object used in the incident has not been confirmed. "We're calling it a sharp-edged object," Baur said.
While the motive for the altercation has not yet been identified, the boy and girl knew each other prior to the incident but were allegedly not in a romantic relationship. "They were known to one another not as a boyfriend and girlfriend," Baur said.
Principal Darryl Williams made an announcement to students and staff at 2 p.m. "This act of aggression is grossly inappropriate," he said. "We will not tolerate this type of behavior in Montgomery County Public Schools and specifically not at Montgomery Blair." Williams also sent a letter home to parents outlining the incident. He was unavailable for further comment.
After the stabbing, the school entered a brief code blue. "We requested an ambulance and went into a code blue to attend to the male student and to ensure the safety of students and staff," Williams wrote in the letter home.
The girl attempted to board a Metro bus and leave from school, but officials stopped her. "School security officials saw her leaving the school," Baur said. "A school educational facilities officer stopped the Metro bus and took her into custody." Williams added that the student had been arrested off of school grounds.
The incident was not related to the recent shooting death of Blair freshman Tai Lam, according to Baur. A Takoma Park man allegedly belonging to the MS-13 gang has been arrested and charged with first degree murder, and the MCPD has issued arrest warrants for two other alleged MS-13 members in connection to Lam's death. "There is no relationship between this incident and the death of Tai Lam," Baur said.
