Writing competition open to Maryland high school students

The University of Maryland, College Park's Anwar Sadat Chair for Peace and Development invites Maryland high school students to discuss their thoughts concerning peace in the Middle East and throughout the world in essay form. Entries should be postmarked by March 18.

Winners of the contest will be notified by April 1, and the top two entries will be announced at the Sadat Lecture delivered by the Honorable James Baker on April 14. The first- and second-place entrants will receive $1,000 and $500, respectively.

The essay should not only contain views on issues related to world peace but should also include a discussion of the late Egyptian President Sadat's impact on the topic. Essays should include a title and be typed, double-spaced and between 1,000 and 1,500 words. On every page, applicants should include their name, home address, phone number and school name and contact information.

According to the contest brochure, essays will be judged based on how they relate to the theme and on the originality of ideas and expression. Students are encouraged to read the earlier Sadat Lectures for Peace delivered by Ezer Weizman, Jimmy Carter, Henry Kissinger, Nelson Mandela, Kofi Annan and Mary Robinson.

Submissions should be mailed to:
