Men apprehended on public bus in Houston

Yesterday morning, members of the U.S. Marshal's Fugitive Task Force in Houston arrested two additional suspects involved in the shooting death of freshman Tai Lam on Nov. 1. Detectives had obtained arrest warrants for Gilmar Leonardo Romero, 20, and Mario Ernesto Milan-Canales, 30. Romero's warrant was for first degree murder and Milan-Canales's warrant was for accessory after the fact for first degree murder, according to the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD).

Marshals found the men on a public bus at 10 a.m. Thursday in Houston, Tex., and took them into custody without incident, police reported. They will be held in Houston, awaiting extradition. "It's kind of poetic justice that they were arrested on a bus," Alfredo Perez, a deputy marshal involved in the investigation, told the Washington Post.

On Nov. 7, confirmed MS-13 gang member Hector Mauricio Hernandez, 20, was arrested and charged with first degree murder. He is currently being held without bond. The role the two additional men played in Lam's murder is unconfirmed, according to MCPD spokeswoman Lucille Baur, and police have not confirmed if Romero and Milan-Canales were involved with MS-13. "We are confident that we have the people responsible for it," she said.

Though initial police reports indicated that the men were in a group of four or five when they shot and killed Lam on a Ride On bus, police do not expect to make any additional arrests. "We don't believe the one or two other people...took action that caused Tai Lam's death," Baur said.

Police are continuing investigations, and wished to thank the Silver Spring community for their efforts. "It was crucial to this investigation to have people call in to provide additional information," Baur said.
