SilverChic: The Golden Globes

Glamorously flat

The Golden Globes are a perfect excuse for us viewers to wistfully dream of walking down the coveted Red Carpet. This year, host Ricky Gervais brought a risqué element to the Globes, but unfortunately, the fashion choices dotting the carpet were not nearly as interesting and much less provocative. Nevertheless, the glamour and charm of the Red Carpet never fully wears off, especially if Brad and Angelina are there.

Back to basics

In an effort to be fashion-forward, many of Hollywood's A-listers went with nude colors. With everyone in nude, the statement was less about fashion-forwardness and simply more of the same. It's like everyone went to the same hip designer and got the exact same fashion advice. Everyone from Sandra Bullock to "Glee" cheerleaders Heather Morris and Naya Rivera were decked out in demure nudes. Even "Gossip Girl" fashionista Leighton Meester jumped on to the trend and sported a modish long-sleeve dress. Make no mistake, nude was in at this year's Golden Globes – maybe a little too in.

Basic black took its spot on the Red Carpet to combat all the other colors – or lack of colors – in a way that has never been so elegant. Celebrities from Eva Mendes to Jane Lynch sported sleek black gowns in homage to the timeless black dress trend. Menswear too revolved around the basic dark suit and tie or bowtie look.

Spots of color

Thankfully there were a few fashion saviors willing to stand out from the otherwise overwhelming yet elegant sea of beige. Mila Kunis and Catherine Zeta Jones led the pack in sparkling emerald dresses and Angelina Jolie rocked a long-sleeve, bold shouldered emerald Versace gown. Brad Pitt held his own in a classic dark suit ensemble. Can this couple do no fashion wrong?

Additional color trends included ruby red, such as January Jones's statement peek-a-boo Versace dress. Jones pulled off the striking gown flawlessly and brought a dose of much needed color to the Red Carpet.

Helena Bonham Carter also couldn't be missed; her dress could have been a creation of her husband Tim Burton. Bonham Carter's outfit – from the wacky mishmash of color to the different colored shoes – was kooky and out there. Still, it was a fun breath of fresh air from the hoards of drab neutrals. Her intentional wild, over-the-top style was just too eccentric to be missed.

Biggest Accessory

The baby bump was no doubt the biggest accessory at this year's Golden Globes. Best actress winner Natalie Portman donned a strapless pink gown with a glittering red rose and expert draping across her bump. The rose, however, looked like blood on the otherwise nice gown and seemed rather like an odd, last minute attempt to take away from her showing pregnancy.

Jane Krakowski, nominated for her "30 Rock" role, took a simpler route with a one-shoulder blue Grecian dress. The dress complimented Krakowski's advanced pregnancy curves while holding just the right amount of simplicity.

Best Dressed

Emma Stone: Newly blond Stone looked absolutely stunning in a Calvin Kline peach dress with a cutout back; pure genius.

Anne Hathaway: Hathaway was the utter essence of glamour in a glittering open back bronze Giorgio Armani Privé evening gown. The dress's combination of a dramatic cutout back and bold shoulders were a fashion lover's dream come true.
