Candidates speak in SAC during lunch

Candidates for the 2008-2009 Student Government Association (SGA) delivered prepared speeches in the Student Activity Center (SAC) during both lunches today in anticipation of elections that will be held tomorrow and Friday. The speeches lasted for less than a minute each and outlined each candidate's campaign platform.

Blazers will be escorted to the gym during social studies periods to vote for their desired candidates. Outgoing SGA president Molly Martinez advised students to "just vote for who you think will do the best job."

Candidate speeches were originally scheduled for last Friday and Monday, but were cancelled due to disorganization within the SGA. "There were problems with preparations so the students had to correct some of the things they didn't do," SGA sponsor Rondei Ravilious explained. "They wanted to be sure everything ran smoothly and fairly and they thought they'd have a better chance to do that if they took the extra time," she said.

Sophomores Sibyl Brown and Andrew Hyder are alone in the race for Executive SGA President. Brown quoted the Lil' Wayne and Birdman song "Pop Bottles" as a metaphor for her determination and leadership skills, while Hyder touted his red and white patent shoes to show his unique bid.

Brown has aligned herself with sophomore Executive Vice Presidential candidate Samuel Zucker, who is running against junior Jessica Arce and sophomore Scott Yu.

Candidacy winners will officially take over SGA office positions May 25, leaving the incoming freshman class elections to take place in September. Martinez is satisfied with her tenure as President and sees continued success even once she is replaced. "It's time for me to go...The new SGA has a lot of challenges to face, but I'm sure they will prevail," Martinez said.
