Bae to serve as 2009-2010 school president, Oladiran elected senior class vice president

The Student Government Association (SGA) announced on Wednesday during second period that junior Alex Bae will serve as school president for the 2009-2010 school year and announced today that junior Olayinka Oladiran won the race for the class of 2010 vice president. Bae won the position after junior incumbent Sibyl Brown pulled out of the race for reelection.

Brown's secession from the race automatically granted Bae the position of SGA president for the next school year. However, the results of the contested race for class of 2010 vice president were determined through a reelection. SGA members visited 11th grade English classes this week to distribute paper ballots.

The initial outcome of the SGA presidential elections on April 30 was contested because candidates allegedly violated election rules by handing out incentives to voters before they entered the voting area. The class of 2010 vice presidential race between juniors Olayinka Oladiran and Karre Lawson was contested for the same reason. According to Bae, a reelection for the presidential race was going to be held in the weeks following the election.

As an alternative to holding a school-wide reelection one candidate proposed to the other the idea of sharing the presidency during the next year. SGA advisers agreed to back the decision if both candidates agreed on it, according to adviser Claudette Smith, but the offer was turned down.

Despite the turmoil over the election, school vice president Mady Nadje is excited for the next school year to begin. "We have a great group of members and I think next year will be great," he said.
