Giants defeat Redskins in sloppy game

This is not original reporting. All information has been compiled from The Washington Post.

The Washington Redskins had trouble holding onto the ball as they suffered a frustrating 20-14 loss to the New York Giants. The Redskins ensured their own loss as they turned the ball over seven times which lead to 17 Giant's points.

The game began positively for the Redskins who drew first blood, scoring on their first drive of the game. After a strong defensive stand the Redskins got the ball and quarterback Mark Brunell led the team to an efficient 10 play 53- yard scoring drive.

However, things from there would be down hill for the Redskins as they looked sloppy causing turnovers and getting penalties. Brunell and Ramsey combined to throw four interceptions, in addition to the five fumbles. The team didn't resemble the usually disciplined style of play common on Gibbs's teams.

The Redskins fumbled the ball on their first drive of the second quarter as Brunell had the ball stripped away and was recovered by Giants Michael Straham. The Giants would score on the ensuing play, with quarterback Kurt Warner hooking up with Tim Carter for a 38-yard score. The Redskins woes continued as Clinton Portis's, 20 carries for 69 yards, fumble was returned for a touchdown by Giants linebacker Barrett Green.

The Giants would be held to two field goals for the rest of the game as The Redskins defense played admirably and was able to contain the Giants offense. The solid play of the defense was not enough to overcome all the turnovers and lack of offensive production.

Brunell pulled a hamstring late in the second quarter and was replaced by quarterback Patrick Ramsey, who was fairly ineffective. He did hurl a 51 yard bomb to Rod Gardner, but throwing three interceptions and being sacked three times kept him from leading the Redskins to a comeback.

Every time The Redskins threatened to make a comeback they killed their drives with penalties and turnovers. The Redskins were on the Giants seven-yard line in the third quarter, but a false start pushed the offense back. The drive would end as Ramsey threw an interception in the end zone to Giants safety Brent Alexander.

The Redskins will return to action next Monday night taking on their division rival Dallas Cowboys.
