Gymnasts place second

Apr. 24, WALTER JOHNSON GYMNASIUM—

The Blair gymnastics team placed second at their meet tonight against Walter Johnson and Springbrook. Although still plagued by injuries and absences, the Blazers managed to beat Springbrook by four points, ending with an accumulated score of 130.25.

Notable first years for tonight's meet include sophomores Lily Ross and Renee Pierce on beam and sophomore Corinne Ducey on beam and bars. On floor and vault, freshman standout Jessie Harrelson did better than expected. "Jessie is the first one out of all the first years to get her round-off back handspring," said Ducey. Also improving is sophomore Korie Ferguson, who competed tonight on floor, bars and vault. "Not only is Korie an awesome gymnast, she's also an awesome teammate," said sophomore Jillian Granados.

Although Walter Johnson took home most of the top awards on beam, floor, vault and bars, Blair managed to place in all of the categories. Sophomore Anna Hadfield placed sixth on floor with an 8.2, fourth on vault with an 8.7, fifth on bars with an 8.2 and fifth on beam with an 8.8. She was also the only Blazer to place as an all-around, placing fifth.

Sophomore Abby Cember also placed on vault and bars, placing fifth on vault with an 8.4 and sixth on bars with an 8.0.

Although the team didn't beat Walter Johnson, the Blazers soundly defeated Springbrook. "It was a rough day for us. I was really. Jessie did the full routine for the first time, overall we're working through some injuries, but we're having a good time, looking forward to counties."

The next meet will take place at 3:30 pm on May 1 at Springbrook High School. Please come out to support the team!
