Comments from two Editors-in-Chief of Silver Chips appeared in an article "Sniper threat takes toll on kids, schools" in USA Today on October 23. The article was about the effects of the sniper on students, school staff and normal functions of the schools.
Senior Jessica Stamler, co-Editor-in-Chief of the print edition of Silver Chips, was quoted in the article. She recounted the story of her morning when police roadblocks caused her to run out of gas while trying to get to school.
The article also mentioned students who were unable to get to school because of bus problems. Stamler went on to express her frustration at the results of the sniper attacks. "One person can shut down our society. I can't get to school because of what this person has done. And even if I get there, it won't be functioning properly... We're trying to get an education," she said.
Senior Kevin Chang, co-Editor-in-Chief of Silver Chips Online, voiced his opinion about the school's decision to postpone homecoming. "It just seems so severe an over-reaction. I find it very unlikely that he'd strike homecoming with all the people around. Besides, we'll be inside a building most of the time," said Chang. According to the article, many other students agree with Chang's view. Chang was also reported as saying that he and his fellow classmates have been "rattled" by the shooting. USA Today printed a picture, at right, of Chang with Online Managing Editor and System Administrator Jeremy Hoffman.
Chang made similar statements to the Scripps Howard News Service, a wire service which sends news about the Washington area to 400 newspapers around the country.
The article discussed the sniper's threat against children. In the article, Arlington County School Board member and Washington antitrust attorney David Foster explained the decision to keep schools open. "These schools are as relatively safe as any other venue children might be in, arguably more safe," said Foster.
Silver Chips Online Managing Editor Nora Toiv was interviewed by ABC Radio about the sniper.
