Lance Armstrong to head team of professional cyclists
The Discovery Channel officially announced their sponsorship of a newly created 2005 Pro Cycling Team in a press event held at the American Film Institute in Silver Spring on Monday, Jan. 10. In a speech given to press members and Blair students, Judith McHale, Discovery Channel Communications president and CEO, introduced six-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong to lead the team.
The Pro Cycling Team comprises 28 professional male cyclists from 15 different countries, including famed American rider George Hincapie. The cyclists showed up to the event sporting their new uniforms: white and blue bicycle suits emblazoned with the Discovery logo along with yellow LiveStrong bracelets.
In the upcoming months, the team is scheduled to compete in races around the globe, including the Three Days of West Flanders (Belgium), the Tour de Suisse (Switzerland) and the Tour de Asturias (Spain). The Discovery Channel plans to document the progress and successes accomplished by the team.
At the end of the presentation, Armstrong took the stage to discuss the future plans for the team. Armstrong also noted that he will decide in April whether or not to participate in the 2005 Tour de France. The cyclists will begin training for the upcoming season in Solvang, California.
