Blazers hold on to lead, baseball wins 8-4

On a blistering afternoon game versus the Walter Johnson Wildcats the Blazers learned that no lead is safe. So when Blair regained an advantage that they had previously lost, they made sure not to make the same mistake twice as the Blazers held on to an 8-4 win.

A seemingly secure 2-0 lead against a less talented Walter Johnson squad suddenly turned into a 4-2 deficit for Blair in the fourth inning. The Wildcats had opportunities to make another comeback after Blair recaptured the lead, but the second time around the Blazer pitching and defense prevailed.

With Blair (13-3) clinging to a 6-4 lead in the fifth inning senior Adam Schlesinger was brought in to relieve pitcher Michael Coe. Schlesinger inherited a bases loaded situation with only one out. One pitch and succeeding double play later and the inning was over with the score remaining the same.

Senior David Mervis' triple to deep center field drove in junior Matt Collogan in the second inning and Blair took a 2-0 lead. However, junior Liam Bowen who smoothly mowed down the Wildcats in the first two innings allowed three runs to score in the third, two of which came on a two run homer over the left field fence.

Walter Johnson added another run to their lead, making the score 4-2 when the Blazer offense began to produce again. Juniors Nick Cope and Thomas Kaufman led off the inning with back to back singles, but two failed sacrifice bunt attempts left Blair with runners on first and second two outs.

Junior Will Fassett hit a routine ground ball to the second baseman who fielded the ball cleanly and made a good throw to first base. Yet somehow Fassett managed to tear down the first base line and beat out the throw for his second infield single of the game and more importantly to salvage the Blair rally. Sophomore Josh Richardson smacked a line drive bases clearing double into the left center field gap and Blair took a 5-4 lead that they would never surrender
