Field Hockey loses to Magruder
Blair- Oct. 22
On a cold rainy evening the Blair Blazers girls varsity field hockey team suffered a disappointing loss in the team's final home game of the season. The Magruder Colonels defeated Blair 7-0 in dominant fashion as Blair's record fell to 2-9 on the season.
Blair continued to lack ball control and threatening offensive attacks. The Blazer offense sputtered and was shutout for the seventh time this season. Meanwhile, the Colonels relentlessly attacked the Blair goal and were able to find the back of the net seven times.
The game started with Blair going on the offensive. During the first quarter of the game the Blazers played well keeping the ball on offense and creating scoring chances. However, Magruder would quickly take control of the game and head into halftime up by two goals.
The Colonels were able to create numerous scoring chances off counter-attacks, breakaways, and penalty corners. The Blair defense made some admiral saves but were unable to keep up the defensive wall against the penetrating Magruder attack.
According to senior co-captain Rachel Feely-Kohl the team has struggled with coming back from deficits. "Once we get scored on our confidence takes a hit," said Feely-Kohl.
Magruder dominated the second half as they scored five goals and controlled the tempo. The half began with two Magruder goals just seconds apart. The Blazers kept playing hard, but were unable to break through the Magruder defense or stop the Magruder offense.
Playing in their final home game, the Blair seniors played their heart's out. Seniors Caitlin Garlow, Alexa Gabriel, Julia Penn, Feely-Kohl and Christina Do all played solid and aggressive games. The three co-captains, Penn, Gabriel and Feely-Kohl, all continued to lead the team with smart play and strong hitting. Gabriel and Feely-Kohl continued to display their great hitting ability on restarts and clears.
The Blazers will play their final regular season game at Rockville on Friday, Oct. 22 at 3:30 p.m.
