Girls' Lacrosse advances in playoffs

In an exciting post-season opener, the Blair girls' lacrosse team, 5-7 in the regular season, demolished the Paint Branch Panthers to advance to the second round of playoffs for the first time in two years. The Blazers will face the Blake Bengals this Saturday.

The girls' lacrosse team beat out the Kennedy Cavaliers tonight in a fast-paced, high scoring game to pick up their fourth win of the season. The Blazers took control with early goals by juniors Rachita Sood and Helen Anderson, and stayed comfortably ahead for the remainder of the match.

The Blair girls' lacrosse team (2-5) took on the Gaithersburg Trojans in a well-fought but disappointing game that ended in the Blazers' sixth straight loss. The Blazers began the game with a solid defense, carefully protecting the goal. However, the girls had trouble bringing the ball downfield, and a powerful Gaithersburg offense scored their first goal after only three minutes.

Though the Blazers never expected to pull out a win against the consistently solid Springbrook team, they were nevertheless disappointed by a lopsided 9-69 loss in the wrestling squad's first dual meet of the season. The team has few returning varsity wrestlers, and even with the use of rookies was forced to forfeit five of the fourteen matches.

OCT. 26, BLAKE— After one of its best seasons in recent memory, the Blair field hockey team (4-9) was knocked out of the 4A Regional Playoffs tonight in a tense, 0-2 match against the sixth-seeded Blake Bengals. Although the Blazers played at Blake's level, they could not compete with Blake's superior stickwork and speed and were unable to break through the Bengal defense.

OCT. 4, BLAZER FIELD– The Blair field hockey won its second game in a row in a 5-0 blowout match against the Kennedy Cavaliers. The Blazers, who are now 2-5 on the season, dominated the game from start to finish, just as in their previous match against the Northwood Gladiators.

SEPT. 25, BLAZER FIELD– Losing a game is almost never fun. But after today's 0-3 loss against the Quince Orchard Cougars, the Blair field hockey team was in the best mood they've been all season. They were in good spirits and a giant sign reading "We Be Beatin' Wheaton" showed their confidence about finishing the season with a win.

It was the same story that has played out again and again for the girls' lacrosse team this year. The Warriors scored easily in the first minute of the game and took off from there. By the end of regulation, the Blazers had been beaten down 2-14 to extend their losing streak to nine games.

Apr. 19, BLAZER STADIUM— It started just like so many of the other girls' lacrosse games this season. An opposing player won the face-off and drove straight downfield to the goal, scoring in the first minute of play. Although the game brought forth frequent "flashes of brilliance" for the Blazers, according to Coach Mike Horne, they could not keep up with Magruder and lost 8-14, to extend their losing streak to seven games.

The gymnastics team lost to the Walter Johnson Wildcats today in an uneven contest that ended with a final score of 164.9 to 142. Coming off of a close 1-point win over Blake last week, the team had high hopes for the match, but injuries and missing gymnasts prevented the team from coming close to a win.

The Blair girls' lacrosse team fell to the Blake Bengals tonight 8-14, stretching this year's losing record to 0-4. Despite the lopsided score, the team was positive about their ability to keep the game competitive. The eight Blair goals were scored by a combination of six different players, a definite improvement over previous games where seniors Maddie Driskill and Diana Frey dominated the offense.

After last week's disappointing loss against Damascus, the Blair Community ice hockey team hoped to turn around their season tonight against Wootton. To their dismay however, the Blazers were demolished by the Patriots in a 10-0 shutout that lasted less than five minutes into the second period.

The Blair varsity field hockey team finished their season with a 1-11-1 record after being soundly beaten in a 7-1 loss against the Springbrook Blue Devils in the first round of county playoffs. The Blazers have struggled for much of the season, and were clearly outmatched by the Blue Devils, who were divisional champions last year and are seeded first this year. Springbrook's crisp, aggressive offense overwhelmed the Blazer defense, and Blair's offense could put enough pressure on the Blue Devils.

The field hockey team was handed a frustrating, double-overtime loss by the Paint Branch Panthers, despite the strongest performance they have had all season. Playing on a muddy field in a frigid rain, the Blazers had an intense game with solid passing and excellent individual performances in the last game of the regular season. Yet it was not enough, as Blair fell 2-1 in sudden death.

The Blazers dominated the game but once again failed to capitalize on their many scoring opportunities.
