Winter weather driving tips

With all the snow, ice, and the inevitable Washington, D.C., slush, driving around is not so safe anymore. Accidents are a lot more frequent these days due to the inclement weather. To try and keep accidents to a minimum this season, here are some helpful hints:

According to The Washington Post, the first thing you'll want to do is clear off any snow or ice on your car. Use the defroster to clear up foggy windows. This will increase visibility, which will help tremendously. If visibility is still low, using your low beams will make a world of difference.

Once you are on the road, make sure to go the posted speed limit if not slower. Generally, speed limits are meant for poor road conditions.

Avoid any sudden braking, accelerating or turning so that your car will not skid and spin out of control. When braking, brake slowly and steadily if you have an anti-lock brake system. If not, pump your brakes. In the event of a skid, ease off the accelerator and/or brake and turn the wheel in the direction of the skid. One you have regained control, straighten the wheel.

If you think a surrounding car is going to lose control, move out of the lane and as far away as possible. In this area, many drivers don't know how to drive as well in harsh weather conditions, so keep your distance from other cars.

Driving in the snow or wintery mix or whatever other kind of bad weather is rough, but it is important to keep your cool and not panic. Sometimes the adverse weather conditions call for fast decisions from the driver, so always remember to stay calm and think about the best way to avoid an accident.
