The Blair hockey team lost its 6th straight game tonight, 9-1, to the over-matched, faster, bigger, stronger, and more experienced Vikings.
Blair never really had a chance to win this one, especially with multiple Blazers out with injuries and illnesses, including starting junior goalie Graham Mathews. Heck, even coach Kevin McCabe was sick.
With Mathews out, freshman goalie Robbie Ginsberg was given an opportunity to play an entire game, the first time all season. Despite the final score, Ginsberg took full advantage of this opportunity and had a performance worthy of a spot on SportsCenter's Top Ten countdown.
I know what you're thinking—it's impossible to say that a goalie who let in 9 goals had a performance worth noting at all. The stats explain it all.
75 shots. Whitman had 75 shots on Blair's goal.
3 shots. Blair had 3 measly shots on Whitman's goal.
"We got whooped," McCabe says bluntly.
If you do the math, you would realize that Ginsberg had 66 saves, which ranks as only the second-most all season by a Blair goalie. Mathews had 69 saves earlier in the year against (who else) Whitman.
Ginsberg doesn't cite the amount of shots as the reason he let in a total of nine goals, however. His modesty leads him to put the blame on himself. "I was a little tired toward the end of the 3rd period," Ginsberg explains, "so I let a few easy ones get by."
