Versatile
Photo: Shashi Arnold is an artist on Silver Chips Print. She works to produce artwork that accompanies stories in the paper. "I’m the art editor so I also do a lot of working things out with other artists, but it definitely starts with communicating with the author of the article and deciding what kind of art would compliment the article well and hopefully add something to it."

Up Close
Photo: Shashi joined Chips at the beginning of her Junior year. "I knew the art editor sophomore year and she was like "do it" so I did it, but I also thought it was really cool being a part of a real publication and getting actual experience as an illustrator."

"Sketch"book
Photo: "On the one hand, I would say school is almost more overwhelming so it’s hard to get art done but I do think moving into second semester because of quarantine and because I’m a second semester senior year, I’m going to have a lot more time to work on projects. I definitely did a lot of art over the summer."

Just like Me
Photo: Shashi talked about finding inspiration outside of Chips. "There’s definitely a lot of just drawing pretty people. I’m definitely up on the Fenty Beauty and Glossier websites like these models are hot let’s draw them and I think I also, not on purpose, do a lot of stuff that’s based off me like everyone tells me a lot of my characters look like me."

Eyes on You
Photo: Shashi described her advice for other artists, saying "I think just you need to be okay with making bad art. When you don’t have motivation, you’re gonna make a lot of pieces that your not happy with but I think it’s important to keep making them anyway and I think something will eventually strike motivation and inspirations."

SCO's Own Artist
Photo: Angela Tu is Silver Chips Online resident staff artist. “It’s a really amazing experience. You have to make sure your piece matches the story, and that you’re getting through everything the writer wants to convey.”

Quarantine Painting
Photo: Like many other artists, Angela has found that having more free time due to quarantine has improved her art. She says, “With isolation, I’ve had a lot of time to focus on my artwork during the time in which I would normally have schoolwork.” It’s difficult to find inspiration when she isn’t surrounded by her peers, but Angela has turned to social media as a new form of inspiration.

Tommy Raskin Portrait
Photo: Angela recently created a tribute piece for Tommy Raskin. Angela says, “I had an initial draft that was a portrait of him where I was just writing his last words over and over again to make that portrait of him. But as I was getting through it I realized that it probably wasn’t something that he wanted to leave behind, his last words were sad.” Angela instead created a portrait that highlighted Raskin’s accomplishments and his ties to the Blair community.

Clay Figures
Photo: Angela’s advice for artists is this: “Art is really just about doing it over and over again. It is a repetitive process and as you repeat it more, you get better, so don’t be shy!”
