Montgomery County superintendent Jerry Weast, along with four other
superintendents, has been selected as a candidate for the National
Superintendent of the Year Award.

According an announcement on the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) website, Weast was recognized for his "successful management abilities, communication skills, professional development and community involvement."

Weast, who has been the Montgomery County superintendent since 1999, was awarded Maryland Superintendent of the Year in 2003.  According to MCPS, Weast has enacted a "rigorous curriculum and high expectations for student success." Specifically, Weast has expanded early childhood education and full day kindergarten. He has also expanded community outreach programs and parent involvement.

The National Superintendent of the Year will be chosen in Febuary by the
American Association of School Administrators (AASA). The winner will receive a $10,000 college scholarship for his or her high school alma mater.

Weast told MCPS, "I am grateful to our teachers, principals, support staff, and administrative personnel who are working tirelessly on the priorities we have identified to achieve a quality education for every child."
