Blair falls to Sherwood in first round of playoffs
BLAZER STADIUM, MAY 13—
When the horn sounded signaling the end of tonight's game, the boys' lacrosse team walked off of the field tired, angry and defeated. In their first round playoff game against Sherwood, the Blazers lost 11-5 to the Warriors, marking the end of a disappointing season.
The Blazers lost to Sherwood just five days ago in their second-to-last regular season game by a 4-point margin. Despite being familiar with the strength of the Sherwood team, the Blazers had trouble with defense in front of the cage and in the midfield. Originally touted as the strong point of this year's squad, the Blazer defense has faltered in the past couple of games and played very inconsistently all season, as was the case tonight.
The sloppy play of the defense was kept in check by junior goalie Andrew Helgeson's breakout performance. The Warriors put 38 shots on him and Helgeson made 20 saves. "Helgeson was amazing tonight," said coach Robert Gibb.
However, Helgeson's saves were not enough to win the Blazers the game. On offense, the Blazers just didn't put up enough goals. Senior co-captain Josh Gottlieb-Miller and junior Patrick Brice each had two goals and senior co-captain Alex Berger had one. Gottlieb-Miller and Berger also had two and one assists, respectively. Most of the other goals shot by the Blazers were wide and poorly placed, a problem they have had all season.
With tonight's loss, the Blazers end the season with a 4-9 record.
