Volleyball ends playoff run

Blair Volleyball fell to the Gaithersburg Trojans in an emotionally charged, disappointing loss, ending their post-season run. The Trojans simply overpowered Blair's defense and employed excellent digs and blocks to keep the Blazers' offense in check. Blair lost in three games (13-25, 15-25, 19-25).

After defeating the Damascus Hornets in the first round of the playoffs on October 31, this loss was very disheartening for the Blazers, especially for the team's six graduating seniors. "I am more disappointed for the seniors," said coach Anne Garrison. "I think we could have won," she added.

The Trojans were able to dominate over Blair using a combination of very strong spikes and a solid service game, something that Blair has struggled with all season. The Trojans were also able to place balls all over the court, putting pressure on Blair's defense.

The Blazers lost the first game 13-25, unable to put together powerful plays when faced with the quick reflexes and general strength of Gaithersburg's front row. In the second game Blair again faced an early Trojan lead, and could not build the rallies and leads they needed to win the game. Gaithersburg won the second game 15-25 after Blair bobbled an attempted block.

The third game found Blair fighting desperately to stay in the match. The Blazers took the game point by point, giving up fewer errors and remaining either in the lead or close behind Gaithersburg throughout most of the game. In the end, however, the Trojans were able to clinch their victory with a well-placed serve that landed, untouched, just inside the line.

Garrison felt that Blair improved from their last match against Gaithersburg, but could not overcome the strong serves, spikes and defense that the Trojans brought to this match. "We both wanted to win really bad," she said. Although Blair is losing five starters to graduation this year, Garrison is optimistic about the 2004 season. "It's going to be a different year. It's going to be tough, but it's going to be a lot of fun," she said.

Garrison was happy with the team's consistent improvement over this season. After starting out with a losing record, Blair managed to collect several key wins in a row. Garrison was especially proud of the team's improved mental game. "I think the girls really started picking up their mental toughness," she said.
