Sophomore Billy Saturno falls in first round at state tournament
Sophomore Billy Saturno, the 125 lbs 4A/3A regional champion competed at the 3A/4A State Wrestling Tournament at University of Maryland's Cole Field House on Saturday. He was defeated in his first match by decision, 11-5, against Seth Goggin of Stephen Decatur High School.
Saturno felt that witnessing the advanced level of both his opponent and all the wrestlers at the tournament affected his confidence. "I started reverting to some bad habits," he said.
Saturno also wrestled in a consolation match against Dulaney High School's Ryan McTeer in which he was pinned at 1:46 minutes into the first period. Saturno attributed much of this loss to mental exhaustion from his first match. "I think I was pretty disappointed about my first match and instead of using it to motivate me to do better…I just couldn't do anything."
Especially difficult for Saturno was the experience of wrestling on a large stage. "This is definitely the biggest tournament I've ever competed in," he said. He cited the large audience as having an influence on his mentality. "During the week I tried to mentally prepare myself as I would for any other tournament; it's a lot different wrestling there though," he said.
Scott added that Saturno's effort to compete at such a high level was commendable within itself. "For him to go out there alone, that is challenging,” he said.
Though he was upset by his loss, Saturno's coaches served as a comfort by reminding him he was still a young wrestler. "[They] told me not to sweat it because I'm only a sophomore and I have two more years to do better at states and place," Saturno said.
Scott maintained his pride for Saturno's performance, emphasizing the level of difficulty that exists at the state level. "He did an outstanding job and I am very proud,” he said.
Saturno expressed that though this experience was disappointing he believes it will benefit him greatly for the future. "Now I have a better idea of what the competition is like at the state level," he said. "So I think I can prepare more for next year with what I've learned from my matches and really my whole experience this year."
