US special operations forces rescued a prisoner of war from Iraqi hands April 1, according to Army Brig. Gen. Vincent K. Brooks in a statement that night at the US base in Doha, Qatar.
NBC news identified the soldier as 19-year-old PFC Jessica Lynch of West Virginia, and reported that she was in good condition. Lynch was with an Army maintenance company that took a wrong turn and was captured in late March, and remained in Iraqi hands for over a week. The Washington Post reported that Brooks said, "The soldier has been returned to a coalition controlled area." Since her rescue, Lynch was moved to a US hospital in Germany for treatment of multiple injuries, including stab wounds. Lynch's family will be allowed to visit her in the near future.
