The General Assembly passes alternate map after the former map was taken down for "extreme partisan gerrymandering"
After Maryland's old congressional map was struck down on March 25, Senior Judge Lynne A. Battaglia from the Anne Arundel County Circuit Court ordered the General Assembly to create a new map by March 30.
Battaglia ruled that the original map violated the state constitution and diluted Republican votes. The new congressional map passed by the Maryland Senate contains more compact districts and preserves the previous 7-1 Democratic advantage, reversing the changes in the discarded map that made District 1 more competitive for Republicans.
However, Republicans believe the new map still benefits the Democrats. "[The map's] a little nicer. It's a little better looking than the last one. But the outcome will essentially be the same," Senator Michael J. Hough (R-Frederick) said.
Battaglia will assess whether the new map is constitutional at a hearing today. The map will only take effect if Battaglia approves it. Additionally, it is unclear as to whether Governor Larry Hogan will sign off on the map.
