Two Montgomery County teens die on road

Friday night marked the death of two Montgomery County teenagers only six hours apart on the same stretch of roadway.

Wootton junior Solomon King, 16, died in a hit-and-run accident on the 14200 block of Travilah Road. King and two friends were walking to a nearby Burger King when a Honda Accord with tinted windows struck King. One of King's friends was grazed by the car but did not suffer any serious injuries, according to The Washington Post. The driver continued westward without stopping.

A few hours later, Churchill junior Sarkis George Nazarian Jr., known as Sako to friends, was killed when he drove off the road and hit a tree near the 12500 block of Travilah Road. Nazarian was driving home from a party in North Potomac, where police claim there was alcohol. Police issued 14 citations for underage drinking at the party.

Driving conditions, which were particularly treacherous on Friday, could have played a role in both accidents. Nazarian was driving too fast along a slippery, narrow, winding two-lane part of Travilah Road, according to police.

King was the only child of Mieko King and now leaves her alone, as his father died a few years ago. Nazarian was part of a large family, the youngest of five brothers with a younger sister.

Family and friends of both students had the best words for them. "He was a loving, giving person," said Nazarian's father The Washington Post. Nazarian, an athlete and soccer player, had dreams of being a dentist after college. King's Wootton classmates described King as friendly and joking.

These accidents are part of a recent flurry of automobile-related teen fatalities. Montgomery County police launched a new teen driver-education program in October as well as a public-education campaign against teenage drinking to try to combat the problem.
