15-year-old loses control of pick-up truck

This is not original reporting. All information has been compiled from the Associated Press and The Washington Post.

Two Ashburn teenagers were killed on Saturday night when the 15-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle, and the two passengers were thrown out of the back of the pickup truck, according to the Associated Press.

Anthony Cibelli-Mason, 17, and Nicholas Pendola, 16, were riding in the open bed of the 15-year-old's Ford F250 truck, when the driver lost control of the vehicle. According to Loudoun County Sheriff's Department spokesman Kraig Troxell, the driver lost control of the truck, hit a curb and went over an embankment. The passengers were then thrown from the open bed of the truck and died at the scene.

According to the Associated Press, the accident occurred around 11:00 p.m. on Ridgeway Drive near Claiborne Parkway in Ashburn, Va. Police deputies found the pickup truck in a ditch after neighbors reported hearing a crash.

The driver, whose name has not been released, only had a learner's permit. According to The Washington Post, the driver remains in critical but stable condition at Inova Fairfax Hospital.

Troxell said that the teens were "joy riding" when the driver began speeding. "It appears speed is a factor," he said.

The three teens were all students at Stone Bridge High School in Loudoun County.

According to Principal Jim Person, Pendola and Cibelli-Mason are the second and third Stone Bridge students to die in car accidents this year.

According to The Washington Post, Person commented about the effect of their deaths on the school community. "This is a pretty close-knit community, kind of a small-town atmosphere. It's been a tough year," Person said.
