Blake and Sherwood students participate in national quiz show

One student from Blake and one from Sherwood were contestants in the "Jeopardy! Teen Tournament," a Sony Pictures Television event that concluded on Tuesday, Feb. 8. The Blake student won the tournament while the Sherwood one was beaten in the semi-finals.

Blake junior Michael Braun will receive $75,000 for his victory, and Sherwood junior Steven Golden will get $5,000. The two students competed against 13 other students from across the nation in this annual tournament, which consisted of nine shows aired nationwide from Jan. 26 through Feb. 8. It was filmed in Culver City, CA on October 26 and 27. The winners and highest money-earners of the first five shows went on to the semi finals. The winners of the semi finals went on to the finals. Each semi finalist was guaranteed $5,000, and the finalists were guaranteed the highest of either the money they won in the finals or $75,000 for first, $25,000 for second and $15,000 for third place. The winner of the finals was determined by the highest dollar amount compiled over the two final shows that were aired Monday and Tuesday night.

Braun was invited to participate in the Ultimate Tournament of Champions, in which 150 "Jeopardy!" victors will compete. That tournament will air later this spring.

Braun and Golden both plan to use the majority of the money they earned for college tuition.
