Protestors demand that all COVID-19 mandates be lifted
On March 6, hundreds of drivers circled the Capital Beltway, also known as Interstate 495, to protest COVID-19 mandates. These protests have continued since then, but have not caused major disruptions.
Although this group of drivers, called The People's Convoy, are often referred to as "truckers", all types of vehicles have been involved. Director of the District of Columbia's Homeland and Emergency Management Agency Christopher Rodriguez estimated that as many as 2,000 drivers may eventually arrive in Maryland.
The main objective of the protestors is to convince lawmakers to end all COVID-19 mandates, such as vaccine requirements and mask mandates. Even though many of these mandates have already been lifted around the country as COVID-19 cases begin to fall, the convoy's leaders insist they will not leave until all COVID-19 mandates are lifted.
On March 8, the leaders, including trucker Brian Brase, of the group met with Senator Ted Cruz and Senator Ron Johnson to express dissatisfaction with the COVID-19 mandates.
On March 10, Cruz rode the lead truck of the convoy into Washington D.C.
