Transformer explosion causes fire, power surge

A power surge and small leaf fire late Friday afternoon were the results of a small explosion on a transformer outside Blair.

Power for the building is supplied by three "phases." According to Mongtomery County Fire Department Captain Matt Buckley, one of the phases shorted out. The ceramic pod that surrounds the phase's transformer exploded.

According to Buckley, the fire that summoned the Fire Department was a result of this explosion. "Pieces of [the pod] fell down and caught the leaves on fire," Buckley said.

The explosion also caused a power surge within the building, the only visible effect of which was a flicker of the lights.
