St. Patrick's Day recipes that will make others green with envy


The Irish may not be known for being the world's best chefs, but they sure do have some recipes that are appetizing and easy to make. With St. Patrick's Day just around the corner, use this guide to Irish foods for a tasty meal to share with friends.

Cabbage soup

Prep time is about 20 minutes. Makes four servings.

Kitchenware:
- 1 thick-bottomed pot with top
- 1 spoon
- measuring cup

Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon virgin olive oil
- 1/2 pound of potatoes (with skins, in 1/4 inch pieces)
- 5 cups stock
- 4 cloves of garlic
- 1/2 large yellow onion
- 1/2 medium cabbage (cored and sliced, 1/4 inch ribbons)
- 1 1/2 cup white beans (drained)
- 1/2 cup parmesan cheese
- 1 pinch of salt

Preparation:


1. Warm olive oil over medium-high heat.
2. Stir salt and potatoes into pot with oil.
3. Cover and cook for about five minutes (the potatoes should be light brown).
4. Uncover to stir in garlic and onion.
5. Cook for another two minutes.
6. Add the stock and beans and allow to simmer.
7. Stir in cabbage and cook until it softens.
8. Add salt until there is enough seasoning for your taste.
9. Enjoy with a generous amount of cheese on top.

Soda bread

Prep time is about 15 minutes. Bake time is one hour. Makes about 10 servings.

Kitchenware:
- 1 bread pan
- 1 large bowl
- 1 sifter
- spoons
- teaspoon
- measuring cup

Ingredients:
- 4 cups flower
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup butter (melted)
- 1 cup milk
- 4 cups baking powder
- 1 1/2 cups raisins
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon caraway seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon salt

Preparation:


1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
2. Grease or butter the bread pan.
3. Sift flower, baking powder, sugar and salt together.
4. Pour raisins and caraway seeds in the large bowl.
5. Pour the flower, baking power, sugar and salt over the raisins and caraway seeds.
6. Add the butter, eggs and milk to the bowl.
7. Stir ingredients in the bowl well.
8. Mold the dough into a loaf and place on the bread pan after it is throughly mixed.
9. Bake for one hour or until golden brown.
10. Enjoy!


Virgin Irish rose

Prep time is about 10 minutes. Makes one serving.

Kitchenware:
- 1 glass
- measuring cup

Ingredients:
- 7 oz ginger ale
- 1 oz grenadine
- 1 oz lime juice
- handful of ice

Preparation:


1. Mix the grenadine and lime juice.
2. Pour over ice into glass.
3. Top glass off with ginger ale, creating a red to pink tint.
4. Enjoy with a group of friends!

Potato soup

Prep time is about 20 minutes. Makes about five servings.

Kitchenware:
- 1 stock pot
- 1 large bowl
- 1 spoon
- teaspoon
- measuring cup

Ingredients:
- 3 cups peeled, cubed potatoes
- 1 cup chicken bouillon
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup chopped ham
- 1 1/2 cups grated cheese
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 1/2 cup chopped celery
- 1/2 cup chopped onions
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 pinch ground black pepper
- 2 teaspoons cream flour

Preparation:


1. Put celery, chicken, onion, parsley, potatoes and water in pot.
2. Simmer until vegetables are tender.
3. Mix flour and milk in separate bowl.
4. Add flour and milk to pot when well blended.
5. Stir in cheese and pre-cooked ham when soup turns thick.
6. Simmer until cheese is melted.
7. Season with salt and pepper.
8. Enjoy!
