Teachers United defeated the Gnats in the finals of the Changuris Cup on Apr 1 with a final score of 3-1.
The first and only point scored by the Gnats was made early on in the game by senior Stuart Berg. The Gnats' small lead was quickly evened out by a point scored by English teacher Lucas Henry.
The game was intense, and after several changes in possession of the ball, the Teachers came through once more with another goal by Henry.
Several plays were made in the crease, an area in which only the goalie may play in. Several near goals occurred on both sides of the field, but it was soon clear that it was the Teachers who dominated.
A lucky shot made by ESOL teacher Charles Wang came from behind the goal posts and bounced off of senior goalie Michael Sidorov's foot and in to score the third and final point for the Teachers.
The Teachers may have realized their lead at this moment, because history teacher Robert Gibb stayed in the area behind the Gnats' goalposts for a long time, perhaps stalling for time.
There was one moment when the Gnats might have had a chance to score another point. Research teacher Mark Curran, in an effort to get to the ball, almost lost his stick. He saved a goal without it, using just his bare hands.
Senior referee Zack Tinkelman thought that this year's final tournament was very well played. "That was a very well-fought game," he said. Tinkelman added that in previous years, the final tournaments had been canceled due to extreme violence. He noticed, however, that this year's match was much less so.
Both the Gnats and Teachers United contributed to an intense game, and might have felt as Tinkelman did. "I was proud of them," he said.
