Computer science teacher Dennis Heidler and US history teacher George Vlasits will debate the issue of "war on Iraq" on October 23 in room 314 at 3:00.
The debate was organized by new Blair club Republicans United and will pit Heidler, the sponsor of Republicans United, against Vlasits, sponsor of the Students for Global Responsibility.
Junior Gordon Su, co-founder of Republicans United, said that the club decided to hold the debate in order to "foster political ideas."
Vlasits said that he agreed to be in the debate for similar reasons. "It's important that these ideas be discussed," said Vlasits.
Both teachers are currently preparing for the debate. Heidler said that Republicans United is "currently doing research to present our case factually." Heidler also said that they are "formulating strategy" for the debate.
Vlasits, however, said that he has not "asked anyone in the SGR to prepare," and instead will get ready for the debate alone.
The debate will be in Lincoln-Douglas style, modeled after the series of debates held between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas. Both speakers will give an opening speech, followed by a cross-examination and then closing remarks.
All students can attend the debate. Republicans United is exploring using the SAC if it appears that the debate will be heavily attended.
