School evacuated after three fires
The individuals involved in Monday's bathroom fires have been identified and apprehended according to Principal Phillip Gainous.
In an announcement to the school on Tuesday, Gainous thanked students for "helping us identify the individuals involved." Gainous asked that the five individuals who provided information come by the office to collect the reward money.
At least three fires were started in the boys' bathroom during fifth period on Monday. The administration plans to prosecute those responsible to the maximum limits under the law. Gainous offered a $100 reward for anyone with information and the Student Government donated an additional $100.
According to Educational Facilities Officer Ralph Penn of the Silver Spring Police Department, the fires were intentionally set, but he is unsure if they are related. All three fires were set in separate boys' bathrooms.
The building was evacuated at the end of 5A. Firefighters entered the building and inspected the bathrooms to be sure they were safe before allowing students to reenter the school.
Penn expressed his disappointment in the performance of students and faculty during the drill. "People think this was a drill, but it wasn't. They were serious fires," said Penn.
In an announcement to the school, Gainous made it clear that the fire alarm was not to be taken lightly. "[The fire] is a dangerous situation. It puts over 3,500 individuals in jeopardy," said Gainous.
