Blazers have opportunity to perform live on Nov. 20

Blair's literary publication, Silver Quill, will host its first open mic on Nov. 20 during 5A and 5B in the Media Center. The open mic is a free show that allows Blazers to perform or watch their peers perform. Silver Quill intends to use this as an inaugural event to be conducted every six weeks.

Silver Quill, a club that works annually to produce an award-winning literary magazine, wishes to use the open mic event as an opportunity for students to present themselves in front of their peers. "This event is big for Silver Quill - we're the voice that represents the literary community at Blair, and we want to reach out to the whole school and encourage them to submit to our magazine as a vehicle for their creativity to be seen and recognized," Silver Quill sponsor Miriam Plotinsky said.

During the program, students may present any type of creative presentation, including "reading slam poetry, non-slam poetry, essays, articles, monologues…or by even singing, dancing, playing music, beat boxing, rapping, improvising and telling jokes," Silver Quill Editor-in-Chief junior Adam Detzner said. To sign up, students should email silverquillmag@gmail.com before Nov. 20.

Silver Quill has also negotiated with the Media Center to allow students to eat their lunches during the event. There will also be baked goods available for free.

Silver Quill managed to pull of the open mic event due to the team's dedication, explained Plotinsky. "We're finally sponsoring the open mic because of the incredibly hard work of our staff members in making the concept become reality," she said. "They have spent hours talking to vendors and coordinating logistical details to make this event successful."

Detzner specified that they had arranged the time, the date, and a microphone earlier this month, and they chose to have the event at the Media Center because it is a large, open space.
