Silver Chips placed second in the nation in the 2002 National Newspaper Association Foundation/Quill and Scroll International Writing/Photo Contest. Also, Silver Chips won more awards than all other Maryland newspapers combined.
Six Silver Chips staffers were declared National Winners in the contest. They won nine awards, including one first place, three more than the previous record for most ever in a single year for Silver Chips.
Omaha Central High School in Omaha, Nebraska placed first in the nation with 17 awards. Henry W. Grady High School in Georgia tied Blair with nine awards.
The contest gives awards in 12 categories every year. Each school is limited to four entries per category. This year's Silver Chips Quill and Scroll National Winners are: Elizabeth Green and Neela Pal for feature writing, Julia Kay for news, Julia Kay and Elana Eisen-Markowitz for In-Depth/Individual, Eric Shansby (twice) for Editorial Cartoon, and Liam Bowen (twice) for Sports.
In addition to winning for both of his cartoons, Shansby was declared the Sweepstakes winner for the Editorial Cartoon category, the equivalent of a first place award. He will receive an engraved plaque a replica of which will be given to the school.
Shansby has recieved several other awards in the past year. In 2001, he won first place in the Maryland Scholastic Press Association's "Newspaper comic strip" category and "Hand-generated illustration" category. Also in 2001, he won the "Amazing Kids" Comic Strip contest working under the mentorship of internationally syndicated cartoonist Guy Gilchrist.
In addition, Shansby became the youngest journalist ever to place in the professional contest the 2001 Maryland-Delaware-DC Press Association Editorial contest for Division D (non-dailies over 20,000 circulation) Editorial Cartoon. The Gazette's Chris Curtis placed first in that contest
This year, he won an award from "Newscurrents" for his cartoon "The Silence of the Dissenters," which will be in a book published by "Newscurrents." He will also recieve a savings bond.
Each National Winner will be eligible for a $500 Edward J. Nell Memorial scholarship in his senior year if he majors in journalism in college.
