All clubs passed except Ryly Weekly

Senators reviewed new club constitutions on Thursday, Nov. 4 during third period at the SGA Senate meeting, approving all previously existing clubs and all proposed clubs except the Ryly Weekly Club.

During the meeting, Acting Third Vice President Flynn Collins revealed that a bill created by SGA President Sebastian Johnson passed at the October Montgomery County Region meeting, which means that MCR will lobby to delay the switch to the new grading policy.

Also, Ryly Weekly, a predominantly Magnet online publication billed as a forum for all students to voice their opinions, was not accepted because of doubts that non-Magnet students' voices would be considered. Those opposed to the club felt that Magnet students already receive enough attention and funds.

The consequences for Ryly Weekly's rejection include not being allowed to showcase at Blair Fair, not receiving any money from the SGA and not having the privilege of selling pizza. Junior Ryan Ly, creator of Ryly Weekly, said that the club had "expected to raise funds and gain popularity."

The publication will resubmit their constitution later this year. "First, we have to find out all the reasons why we were rejected in the first place, and then we'll work with that," projected Ly.

The new or revised clubs that were passed are the Montgomery Blair Jam Club, the Esperanto Society, the Silver Quill literary magazine, the Indian Club, the Ice Hockey Club, the Youth Leadership Club, Student Democrats and Young Republicans.

Additionally, Academy Coordinator Susan Ragan raised the issue of the Blair open house scheduled for the evening of Nov. 15. She requested student volunteers to act as tour guides for groups of parents. She also asked for the presence of club representatives to inform middle-school students about the extracurricular opportunities at Blair and students who speak languages other than English to help parents who aren't fluent. Interested students should contact Ragan in room 342.
