Homecoming Dance to be held on Oct. 27, tickets to go on sale Wednesday
The SGA has selected the Spirit Week themes for the week leading up to homecoming, according to SGA Communications Director and Spirit Week coordinator Ariel La. Tickets for Homecoming, which is on Oct. 27, will go on sale next week.
This year's homecoming revolves around the theme "Eras." Seniors will be the future, juniors the 60s and 70s, sophomores the Renaissance and freshmen Ancient Greece, according to SGA Vice President Amina Goheer.
During spirit week, each weekday will be a spirit day for the school. Monday, Oct. 22, will be Adventure Day, and students are encouraged to dress as their favorite action heroes. Tuesday will be Senior Citizens Day and Wednesday Wacky-Tacky Day. On Thursday, students should dress in accordance with sub-themes. As always, Friday will be School Colors day - seniors in red, juniors in white, sophomores in black and freshmen in gray. On each spirit day, Blazers are encouraged to go to the SGA office in room 161 and enter the Best-dressed male and female contest.
The SGA will kick off Spirit Week with an outdoor "Screen on the Green" film screening of the movie "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure," starring Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter. The film, which is about time travel, relates to this year's homecoming theme.
The movie screening, which is being coordinated by SGA President Molly Martinez, will be on Oct. 18 in the football stadium from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The screening will be open to Blazers, their friends, families and everyone in the Blair community, according to La. Admission will be $2 for students with an ID and $3 for guests without an ID. "'Screen on the Green' is supposed to kick-start Spirit Week and get everyone really excited about homecoming," La said.
In the days leading up to Spirit Week, class councils and SGA cabinet members will decorate the school's hallways according to their chosen sub-theme in order to raise class spirit.
Afterschool clubs have also been assigned hallways to decorate according to their sub-themes and the nature of the club. Clubs will receive prizes for well-decorated hallways.
All ideas for homecoming themes originated in the SGA Cabinet, whose members brainstormed a list of about 30 themes, said SGA Chief of Staff Vijay Baharani. This list then went on to the Senate, which narrowed it down to five candidates. These included music genres, movie genres, espionage, seasons and eras. "Eras" was subsequently chosen by the House of Representatives back in September.
Many other activities will also be ongoing during Spirit Week. Homecoming tickets sales will open next Wednesday and continue through Spirit Week. Tickets will go for $10 per person. Students wishing to buy dance tickets must have paid off all of their obligations. Lunches will feature performances by many of Blair's school clubs and students will also receive ballots to vote for homecoming court.
Spirit Week, as always, will culminate in the fall sports pep rally, which will be on Oct. 26. The pep rally will occur during seventh period and will feature DJ Chris Styles from HOT 99.5. The SGA has also organized a tailgate party that will take place after school and last until the start of the homecoming football game that day.
The dance itself is scheduled for Oct. 27 from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. at Blair. This year's homecoming has been scheduled later than in previous years and in comparison with those of others schools. This adjustment was made to better accommodate the football schedule and also to allow more time for the incoming freshman SGA class council to make plans, according to Baharani.
