Blair Magnet senior Gordon Su placed tenth nationally in the annual Intel Science Talent Search for his behavioral and social sciences project, "The Effects of Economic Globalization on Income Inequality in Post-Mao China." He will receive a $20,000 scholarship from the Intel Corporation.

"Everyone [at the competition] was so amazingly smart. I was constantly learning there," said Su. "I think the reason I was tenth was more political – [Intel] probably wanted to encourage projects like mine."

Su and fellow magnet senior Melis Anahtar were among 40 finalists who competed for scholarships totaling nearly $580,000. Each finalist presented and defended their research to a jury of nationally recognized scientists and was formally interviewed four times.

A senior from North Attleboro, Massachusetts, Herbert Mason Hedberg, took first place and a $100,000 scholarship for his biochemistry research project that focused on the role of telomerase enzyme inhibitors as potential tumor suppressors.

More information on the competition can be retrieved from the Intel Science Talent Search web site.
