Senior activities to be held on PSAT day

Several senior activities will be held during the PSAT testing day this Wednesday. Resource counselor Marcia Johnson, who was not available for comment, organized the events.

Attendance is mandatory for seniors. "Good attendance is the expectation of all students on a daily basis," said assistant principal Myriam Rogers.

The senior class, 694 students, is expected to report to the gym at 7:25 a.m., where they will attend an informational session lasting 50 minutes. The remainder of the time will be dedicated to five different concurrent sessions; students will be able to visit three of these sessions between 8:15-9 a.m., 9-10 a.m. and 10-10:40 a.m.

The Trailblazer packet completion session, essay writing session and scholarship and financial aid session will allow 30, 25 and 15 students, respectively, to attend at a time. Simultaneously, a session allowing 30 students at a time will help students set up Family Connections accounts, use "Bridges" (an interest profile web site) and select colleges. Rogers believes that the sessions will be effective despite the limitations on students.

"You're going to have a limited number of students you can impact," said Rogers. Lastly, a college and career fair will be held at the gym and is open to an unlimited number of seniors. Locations for the other sessions will be given during the informational session.

The sessions were designed based on student feedback from last year. This year's sessions were ones from last year that had good feedback, according to Rogers. Other sessions, such as a college interviewing session, which gave tips on interviews with college representatives, were not offered this year because "the timing wasn't really relevant," said Rogers. The Career Center will try to use other methods to deliver this information to seniors.

"It's going to be a great experience," Rogers said. "The Counseling Department will take the time to solicit feedback. Our goal is constant improvement."
