The Semester Shakedown has been postponed indefinitely because of a lack of a clear policy on freak dancing, according to Blair Network Communications (BNC) Public Relations Director Jamie Platky.
Platky, BNC General Manager Christopher Lloyd and BNC Radio Public Relations Manager/dance coordinator Yodit Beru decided to postpone the BNC-sponsored dance. "With all the freak dancing controversy going on, we wanted there to be a concrete policy before we hold the dance," said Platky.
According to Platky, the SGA and administration met on Jan 13 to discuss a policy on freak dancing. The meeting, postponed from Jan 7 (see related story, Dirty dancing may face ban), established basic rules about appropriate and inappropriate behavior, but did not produce clear guidelines.
The meeting "left it open for chaperones to exercise judgement," said Platky, who cited concerns about "gray area" in the guidelines and inconsistent application of rules as issues in the decision to postpone the dance.
Platky also said that BNC wants to wait to hold the dance "until there are specific rules drawn up [regarding freak dancing], though that could take a long time." The SGA, PTSA, faculty and administration plan to draft rules at a joint meeting for which a date has not yet been set.
