Second annual college/career night held

College and Career Night was held last night to inform students about the choices they have after high school. The event, sponsored by the PTSA, focused mainly on college possibilities but also touched on career options.

Guidance counselors Karen Hunt, Sharon Williams, and Kathy Henderson, began the night with information about the guidance department's role in college applications. They stressed that students should register online for upcoming standardized tests including the SAT I, SAT II, and ACT. The career center and guidance department is available for help if students have a concern about this.

Hunt broke the process down into four basic steps. The first step she recommended was for students to visit the career center.

The second step she said was for students to make an effort to "get to know their counselors." She urged students to keep counselors informed about awards or other recognition they receive. The more
the counselor knows about a student, the better the letter of recommendation he/she can write. She also added that since the county ration of guidance counselors to students is about 300:1, it is difficult for counselors to know students personally unless the student makes the effort.

The third step is for students to visit the school registrars. The registrars are responsible for sending in transcripts to colleges. they are able to do so as long as they have 20 days notice.

Lastly, the student should do research on their own. Hunt suggested using the building bridges program and completing a portfolio and self-evaluation available through guidance.

The counselors speeches were followed by speeches from representatives of several area schools including American University and University of Maryland, College Park. A representative of Montgomery College informed students of an open house on Saturday November, 23, at the Rockville campus. A representative from Howard University was scheduled to speak but could not make it.
