Roger Miller offers a taste of West Africa

The sounds of Kofi Olomide and Papa Wemba resonate from a TV set at the front of the tiny dining area in Roger Miller, greeting diners as they swing open its door and expect something out of the ordinary. Located in Downtown Silver Spring, the restaurant's small settings and comfortable surroundings give the promise of an enjoyable dining experience. Customers here won't be disappointed.

The many artifacts adorning the walls and counters in Roger Miller create a calm and comfortable ambience. Frames with African art furnish the walls of the restaurant. The eight red cloth-covered tables seat just 25 (not counting its small bar up front), which allows for intimacy and creates a homey environment. The flower-covered cushioned chairs make the experience all the more pleasurable.

The service in Roger Miller is friendly and quick, or so it seems; music videos featuring African artists blare on the TV set, capturing the attention of almost every diner, causing them to forget their tummy's callings and get into the rhythm.

The meals here are served hot in large portions and cooked to suit your preference. The menu at Roger Miller recommends a list of meals from all over West Africa. The Fried Chicken dish is delicious, served with fried plantains and spinach, seasoned to perfection. The chicken's coat is a little too crispy, however its interior is bursting with flavor. Other dishes listed on the menu include Jama Jama, a vegetable dish served with beef, chicken, or fish, and Egussi Shrimp, shrimp prepared with egussi sauce and ginger, served with rice, plantain or fufu (a starchy substance made of corn maize).

Even better than the food at Miller are the prices, which are all very affordable. Entrees range from $4.99 to $14.99; cheesecake, the most costly dessert on the menu, is a mere $2.99. With prices like these, it's no wonder why Miller's the winner of the 2001 Washingtonian Best Bargain Restaurant Award.

Roger Miller Restaurant is located at 941 Bonifant St. in Silver Spring, MD, and is open Monday through Saturday for lunch and dinner, and Sunday for dinner.
