On Thursday, Dec. 14, Project LIT hosted the Free Book Fair for students and staff in the media center. During lunch, students traveled through media center tables divided up by genre, selecting a maximum of two books in the Main Area and three books in the Children’s and Middle School sections. Staff members visited during periods six and eight.

A seasonal tradition, the Free Book Fair is an opportunity for students to acquire free books donated by the Blair community. The book fair originated when Media Assistant and Project LIT sponsor Sandie Angulo Chen’s close friend in N.C. suggested hosting a “true book fair.”

After realizing that many kids couldn’t buy books at Scholastic Book Fairs growing up, Chen decided to host the Free Book Fair at Blair. “Growing up, [during the] scholastic book fair, everything had to be purchased. And there were always kids who couldn’t afford a book so they would just get a pencil, eraser, or a gadget,” Chen says.

Sophomore Riley MacArthur touches upon how there’s something different about owning a book. “There’s something special about owning a book [and] being able to go back to it multiple times and just having it so it’s part of your own personal collection versus borrowing it from a library,” MacArthur says.

Look out for Project LIT’s next book fair in the spring!
