The former Washington Redskins head coach, Joe Gibbs, who led the Redskins to Super Bowl victories in the 1980's and early 90's will return to the team next season as head coach.
Gibbs, 63, agreed to a five-year contract with the Redskins that will also make him team president, still not all details of the contract have been released. However owner Daniel Snyder and vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato are likely to continue being involved in personnel decisions. Gibbs is expected to bring in former Buffalo Bills coach, Gregg Williams, as the defensive coordinator and Joe Beugul, who was Gibbs offensive line coordinator in the mid 1980s and head coach of the Arizona Cardinals and Oakland Raiders, as an assistant head coach.
When Steve Spurrier resigned eight days ago the Redskins began the search for a new head coach. Owner Daniel Snyder had interviewed former Minnesota Vikings coach Dennis Green, former New York Giants coach Jim Fassell, and Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Ray Rhodes.
However, Gibbs's winning history was too tempting to turn down. Gibbs led the Redskins to three Super Bowl victories and a career record of 140-65. Gibbs led the Redskins to playoff appearances in eight of his 12 seasons.
After leaving the Redskins in 1992, Gibbs owned a successful NASCAR company and is a minority owner of the Atlanta Falcons, which he will have to sell.
Gibbs enjoys NASCAR but the want to coach has not dissipated. "The desire to coach has always been with me, even after being away from the game for 11 years," said Gibbs in a statement released by his NASCAR team. "After speaking with my wife Pat, we both agreed it would be a thrill to go back. I appreciate Daniel Snyder giving me the opportunity to coach again. But rest assured, I remain personally committed to Joe Gibbs Racing and each and every sponsor who supports the many employees of Joe Gibbs Racing."
Gibbs will be officially introduced as the Redskins head coach Thursday evening in a press conference.
