Incendiary device discovered on school grounds

Northwood High School was evacuated today before 7 a.m. because of what police described as an incendiary device that was discovered in the school's parking lot. Law enforcement is investigating the incident, and there are no suspects at this time.

During a routine inspection of the grounds at 6:25 a.m. this morning, building services discovered the device. They notified security and fire and rescue personnel, according to Brian Edwards, MCPS Director of Public Information.

According to The Washington Post, the device did not turn out to be an explosive.

As the school day began, school officials instructed one-hundred-seventy students to walk to Forest Knolls Elementary School in Silver Spring. School officials were deciding whether to send the students back to school but later decided to end the day early. The remaining student body of 150 was on a field trip to Philadelphia and was not affected by the incident.

School is expected to proceed as usual tomorrow.
