Senior Anatoly Preygel was one of 20 students selected for the second team of the USA Today 2003 All-USA High School Academic Team.
The students were chosen by a panel of judges, who evaluated students' outstanding original academic, artistic or leadership endeavors. Judges assessed the students based on the students' ability to describe their efforts in writing, supplemented by recommendations from the teacher that nominated them for the team and two other persons of the nominee's choice. According to USA Today, the students are the "best and brightest high school students," recognized "as representatives of all outstanding high school students."
The first team consisted of the top 20 students chosen by the judges. Second and third teams consisted of the top 40 runners-up.
Preygel achieved a 4.0 GPA, placed third in the Intel Science Talent Search for his work on quandle cocycle invariants, qualified for the Math Olympiad three times, and scored a 1600 on the SAT.
Two other MCPS students also made the All-USA High School Academic Team. Wootton High School senior Nicki Lehrer made the first team, and Kevin Wei Gan, also from Wootton, was selected for the second team.
