Blue Line to add two new stations in December
The following information is compiled from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) website.
The Metro Board Planning, Development and Administration Committee announced last Wednesday, Sept. 15 its final plans for the opening of a new station between Rhode Island and Union Station. The station, known as New York Ave.-Florida Ave.-Gallaudet U, cost over $103 million to complete.
The New York Ave.-Florida Ave.-Gallaudet U Metrorail station is planned to open on Nov. 20, one month earlier than expected. Construction began at the end of 2000 and is almost entirely complete except for tiling and painting.
The addition will bring the total number of stops to 84 in the entire Metro system and should bring in an extra 6,600 customers in its first year. Board member Gladys Mack stated to the WMATA that the area around the station "will soon reap the benefits of what other communities have discovered over the years as to why Metro is so important to the metropolitan area in terms of job growth, affordable living opportunities and safe, quality public transportation services."
The Metro also plans to open two new stations on the Blue Line, which will add three miles to the track. The two stations will be called Morgan Blvd. and Largo Town Center.
This announcement "truly marks a major milestone in Metro's illustrious 28-year history," stated Metro Board Chairman Robert J. Smith in a formal interview with WMATA. "The extension of the Blue Line beyond Addison Road-Seat Pleasant will act as a catalyst for the renewal and revitalization of this area, providing a host of new opportunities for the people of Prince George's County, MD, and enhanced customer service for all Metrorail customers."
